Vitalize Gives Training Days, "A Good Gut Feeling"

A sponsor of M&R Equestrian Services' Training Days, Vitalize encourages equestrians to make their New Year's Resolution to win the game against ulcers.

For M&R Equestrian Services' Training Days sponsor Vitalize, January is the month of the hindgut. While ulcer prevention and treatment are often a focus during a busy show season, research shows that gastric ulcers are not the only kind of ulcers horse owners should be concerned with.

  • More than 90% of performance horses suffer from gastric ulcers

  • Up to 60% also are prone to hindgut ulcers.

A gastric ulcer is a lesion on the horse’s stomach lining and is the most common type of ulcer. Hindgut or colonic ulcers, meanwhile, are located further down the digestive tract in the intestines or “colon” of the horse. These ulcers are less commonly studied, but it is known that they are more common in horses that are already suffering from gastric ulcers.

To prevent ulcers in horses, Vitalize recommends:

  • Establish and maintain a consistent feeding schedule

  • While life as a performance horse can be stressful, minimize stress however you can. For example, set up your stall at the horse show as similarly as possible to your horse's stall at home.

  • Feed a preventative supplement.
